Got a new thing to play with in my office. I think this is now the coolest thing I own.

TELL ME MORE.
I’ve always wanted a little Stirling engine for my desk... seems less appropriate now that I work in an office in a university, rather than at a marina... but I still want a little external combustion engine on my desk.
Please tell me more about this thing.

I’m not convinced. That nixie tube clock is pretty sweet.

What do you want to know? It is, as far as I can tell, Chinese. It’s surprisingly well made, though there are some parts that are epoxied, which might make repairs, if they’re ever needed, somewhat difficult. It’s easy to run, and comes fully assembled. Despite the video, it’s actually relatively quiet, making a satisfying mechanical noise. It’ll run for 7 0r 8 minutes on each fill of fuel. The burners need to be warmed for about a minute before they’re hot enough to run the engine. They;re available from a few sites online for about $300, though I got mine on eBay, used, listed as “Airplane engine model”. The seller clearly had no idea what it was, as it was $50. Happy to answer any other questions you might have.
I also have this one, which is much smaller and much cheaper and runs on rubbing alcohol instead of butane.

It’s got a dead tube :( Need to order a replacement. My office is where I keep all my cool shit. I actually had a weekly Facebook feature detailing all the crap in there for a while.

Mostly what you said - where it came from, what it’s called. I will now spend way too much time looking into these, put them on my wish list, and then end up asking for practical things instead. But man, that’s cool.

LOL. Oh, and I work in a corporate headquarters. No issues with running it in my office.

Awesome... I’ve got a little Stirling engine on my desk, but it’s nowhere near as complex!
